GPT-5
OpenAI's flagship unified model that routes between fast answers and deep reasoning
About
GPT-5 is OpenAI's flagship model family, released August 7, 2025. It replaces the old split between GPT and o-series reasoning models with a single system: an intelligent router decides per query whether to answer directly, think briefly, or reason at length, and exposes a reasoning-effort control to developers. The family ships in Standard, Mini, and Nano sizes plus a Pro tier for the hardest tasks. It is multimodal with a large context window and full tool use, and it became the default model in ChatGPT on launch. Early reception was mixed: users liked the speed and lower hallucinations but some missed GPT-4o's tone, which OpenAI partially restored by bringing 4o back as an option. Pricing undercuts the old o3 tier substantially, which made it the economical frontier default for many teams.
