About

XTTS v2 is Coqui's multilingual text-to-speech model: zero-shot voice cloning from a ~3-second reference clip, cross-lingual synthesis, and fine-grained control over speaking rate and style. With 6.5M Hugging Face downloads it remains one of the most-used open TTS checkpoints ever released.

Important caveats. Coqui the company shut down in January 2024, so XTTS v2 is frozen in time — no updates, no security fixes, and community forks carry it forward. More importantly, the weights are under the Coqui Public Model License (CPML): custom, NOT open source — commercial use requires Coqui's permission (unobtainable from a defunct company, which leaves commercial users in a legal gray zone). Treat as research/personal-use weights. Newer Apache-2.0 alternatives (CosyVoice2, Orpheus, KittenTTS) exist for commercial work.

Benchmarks

No standardized TTS benchmarks. Provider-claimed (Coqui): high speaker similarity and naturalness across 16 languages vs. contemporary 2023-era systems — treat as provider-claimed; independent evaluations are scarce and the model is 2+ years old.

Provider-reported unless a source says otherwise. Benchmarks are marketing-adjacent by nature — treat them as directional.

Trust score — 6/10

/10 trustMetrics-checked

Scored 6/10 (metrics tier). Enormous adoption (6.5M HF downloads, peer-normalized near the top) is real, but the score is capped hard by reality: the vendor is dead (no maintenance since Jan 2024), and the CPML license is not open source — commercial use needs permission from a company that no longer exists. Fine for research and personal projects; a legal gray zone for products.
