Grok-2 was released by xAI on August 13, 2024, paired with the smaller Grok-2 mini. It combined frontier-level reasoning with real-time access to posts on X and image generation powered by Black Forest Labs' FLUX.1, a combination no other major lab offered at the time.
Grok-2 was available to X Premium subscribers and via the xAI API as a closed model. In September 2025 xAI open-sourced Grok 2.5, but the Grok-2 release weights themselves were never published — treat this entry as the closed 2024 release.
