About

DALL-E 3, released October 2023, was OpenAI's breakthrough in prompt-faithful image generation: tightly integrated with ChatGPT (which rewrites and refines prompts conversationally), it powered image creation in ChatGPT, the API, and Microsoft's Bing Image Creator/Copilot. Status change: the DALL-E 3 API was retired on May 12, 2026 — the dall-e-3 model ID now returns model_not_found; OpenAI's ChatGPT image generation moved to GPT Image models (gpt-image-2). Existing generated images remain in user histories, but new generations must migrate. This entry is kept as a historical record; do not start new projects on it.
