Brain.fm
AI-composed functional music engineered for focus, sleep, and relaxation, backed by the company's own neuroscience research.
About
Brain.fm takes a different angle from song generators: its engine composes adaptive, lyric-free music in real time, built around patented neuromodulation techniques meant to nudge the listener into a chosen mental state. Modes cover Deep Work, Learning, Creativity, Motivation, plus guided and unguided sleep, meditation, and power naps, with infinite playback and timer modes built into the player.
The company funds and publishes its own research, including a 2024 Nature Communications paper on rapid modulation in music supporting attention, and reports NSF grant funding for the underlying program. That backing is stronger than most focus-music apps offer, but it is largely company-funded research with limited independent replication, and individual response varies. Pricing is $14.99/month or $99.99/year with a free trial; a student discount is advertised.

Use cases
Trust score — 6/10
Scored 6/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: pricing ($14.99/mo, $99.99/yr) taken from the official brain.fm/pricing page; peer-reviewed research claims (Nature Communications 2024, Frontiers, NSF grant) reported by the company and echoed in independent reviews. Strengths: real product, peer-reviewed publications, long operating history, patented approach. Docked for: (1) research is largely company-funded with limited independent replication; (2) efficacy claims (e.g. 119% focus-brainwave boost) are company-reported; (3) closed product with no API or open research code. License: proprietary.
