About

StackBlitz is the company behind WebContainers — a WebAssembly-based Node.js operating system that boots a real filesystem, package manager, and dev server entirely inside the browser, with no server infrastructure required. The technology powers interactive tutorials, in-app IDEs, and AI-powered tooling with runtime awareness across the web development ecosystem.

In late 2024 StackBlitz launched Bolt.new, an AI full-stack app builder built on WebContainers: one prompt scaffolds frontend, backend, database, and auth with a live preview in the browser tab. Bolt Cloud (added September 2025) supplies databases, storage, edge functions, and hosting, and the open-source bolt.new codebase ships under MIT as a foundation for custom AI dev agents. The hosted product is token-metered (around $25/mo with 10M tokens, and a 1M-token/month free tier with no card required).

What it can do

  • Full Node.js dev environment in the browser via WebContainers
  • Bolt.new AI app builder — prompt to full-stack app with live preview
  • Embeddable WebContainer API for in-app IDEs and tutorials
  • One-click deploy to Netlify, GitHub sync, Figma import, Stripe payments

Setup

Sign up at stackblitz.com for the browser IDE, or bolt.new for the AI app builder — both run in the browser with no installation.
