About

OpenCommit is an open-source CLI that turns staged git changes into meaningful conventional-commit messages using AI. Run oco and within about a second your diff is analyzed and committed with a structured message. It supports OpenAI, Anthropic, Gemini, Azure, Mistral, Groq, DeepSeek, OpenRouter, and local models via Ollama or llama.cpp — every commit in its own repository was generated by the tool itself, and it won the GitHub 2023 hackathon.

The honest picture: it solves exactly one problem — commit messages — so teams expecting broader git automation will be disappointed. Message quality tracks the model you pay for; local Ollama models are convenient but noticeably weaker. Emojis and long descriptions are on by default, which some teams find noisy until configured. The project has several community forks, so stick to the actively maintained upstream.

What it can do

  • One-command AI commit messages from staged diffs
  • Conventional-commit format with configurable emojis
  • Multi-provider support including local Ollama/llama.cpp
  • GitHub Action for CI workflows
  • Fully configurable message style
  • API key stored locally, never sent anywhere except your provider

Setup

Install with npm install -g opencommit, then oco config set OCO_API_KEY=<key> (or point it at Ollama for local models).

Prerequisites

Node.js; a git repository; an LLM API key or local Ollama setup.
