About

OpenAI Skills is the official skills catalog in the openai/skills repository, built around the Agent Skills open standard (agentskills.io) where skills are folders of instructions, scripts, and resources that agents discover and use. It is organized into tiers: system skills that ship automatically with Codex, curated skills installable by name through Codex's $skill-installer, and experimental skills for trying new ideas. Each skill carries its own Apache-2.0 license file.

At roughly 27,800 GitHub stars in a late-September 2026 snapshot, it is one of the most-starred skill collections in existence and the reference implementation of the open standard that other vendors follow. The voice-audio side of the catalog includes file-based speech generation and transcription skills with bundled Python CLIs. Installs happen inside Codex via the $skill-installer, or the repo can be referenced directly by other agents.

What it can do

  • System skills bundled automatically with Codex
  • Curated skills installable by name via $skill-installer
  • Experimental skills for new workflows (skill creator, concise planning)

  • Reference implementation of the Agent Skills open standard

Setup

Inside Codex, run $skill-installer <skill-name> for curated skills, or reference https://github.com/openai/skills directly.
