Notion Sites
Notion's built-in way to publish pages as websites — instant sync, custom domains as a paid add-on.
About
Notion Sites, launched in June 2024, turns any Notion page into a public website: toggle a page to public, pick a notion.site domain or attach your own, and Notion serves a hosted version with search-friendly URLs, navigation, light/dark themes, and basic SEO controls. Every Notion database can render as a gallery, list, or table on the live site, and edits in your workspace sync to the live site instantly — no separate CMS to maintain.
The economics: free users can claim one notion.site domain; paid plans ($10+/seat/mo) unlock site customization, Google Analytics, and up to five notion.site domains. Custom domains are a separate add-on — $8/mo per site annually or $10/mo monthly, up to 25 domains. The limits are real: no custom HTML, CSS, or JavaScript; no password protection; meta tags editable only on the homepage, not subpages; and no per-page sitemaps. It is the simplest option for docs, wikis, handbooks, and lightweight portfolios — and the wrong one for anything needing real design control. Third-party builders like Super, Potion, and Bullet exist precisely to fill these gaps.
What it can do
- Publish any Notion page as a website with one toggle
- Instant sync — Notion workspace is the single source of truth
- notion.site domains, custom domains via paid add-on, SSL included
- Automatic navigation, responsive design, light/dark mode
- Basic SEO meta tags and search engine indexing controls
- Notion databases render as galleries, lists, or tables on the live site
Setup
- Build your content as Notion pages using the block editor.
- Toggle a page to public and open Sites settings.
- Claim a notion.site domain (free users get one; paid plans up to five).
- On a paid plan, customize the theme, navigation, and favicon, or buy the custom-domain add-on.
- Publish — edits sync automatically.
Prerequisites
A Notion account; paid plan ($10+/seat/mo) for customization and analytics; custom-domain add-on ($8–$10/mo per site) for your own domain.
Use cases
Works with
Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (METRICS tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Notion's official Sites documentation confirms the launch (June 2024), domain rules, and the custom-domain add-on pricing ($8/$10 per site). Strengths: zero-setup publishing for the millions already working in Notion, honest free tier, instant sync. Docked for: (1) no custom HTML/CSS/JS and no password protection — hard ceilings; (2) SEO is basic (homepage-only meta tags, no per-page sitemaps); (3) the custom-domain add-on makes the real cost $18+/mo per seat, eroding the price advantage over third-party builders. License: proprietary SaaS, closed-source.
