meteoblue
Basel weather service with AI-mixed multimodel forecasts, global history back to 1940 and climate-risk products for business.
Acquired — still operating
Windyty S.E. (Windy.com's parent) acquired a majority stake in June 2024; meteoblue continues to operate under its own brand.
About
meteoblue is a Swiss weather company that started in 2006 as a spin-off from the University of Basel, founded by Mathias Müller and colleagues after developing high-resolution models there. Its signature is the MultiModel: instead of betting on one forecast source, it runs a 'models of models' approach — and more recently an AI-based learning multimodel (mLM) — that learns which model combination works best for each site, sometimes trained on the customer's own station measurements.
The service side covers forecast, history (back to 1940), maps, radar, satellite and image APIs, plus newer business lines: City Climate services and climate risk assessments for buildings and portfolios. It celebrated 20 years in 2026. In June 2024 Windyty — the company behind Windy.com — acquired a majority stake in meteoblue, with both brands continuing to operate. Consumers get free forecasts with a point+ subscription (about €10/month) for the premium layers; developers get a free weather API for non-commercial use.

Trust score — 7/10
Scored 7/10 (TIER metrics, metrics-v1). Evidence: 2006 University of Basel spin-off origin and 2026 20th anniversary confirmed in meteoblue's own newsletter; June 2024 majority-stake acquisition by Windyty reported via PR Newswire; 4.76-star Android app with 5M+ installs documented independently. Strengths: two decades of operation, transparent about the MultiModel method, free non-commercial API, real climate-services business. Docked for: (1) accuracy claims are provider-stated without independent benchmarks; (2) now majority-owned by a direct competitor's parent; (3) premium pricing on website vs app is managed separately and confusing. License: proprietary; free consumer tier, point+ ~€10/month, API tiers custom.
