Llama Stack
Meta's open-source framework for building generative AI apps on Llama.
About
Llama Stack is Meta's open-source framework for building generative AI applications, introduced in July 2024 alongside the Llama 3.1 release. It standardizes the core building blocks for going from prototype to production: a unified API layer covering inference, RAG, agents, tools, safety, and evals, with a plugin architecture so implementations can be swapped across local, on-prem, and cloud environments.
It ships prepackaged verified distributions plus SDKs for Python, Node, iOS, and Android, and later positioned itself as an OpenAI-compatible API server so any OpenAI client can point at it and swap between Llama, GPT, Gemini, or Mistral models. Major ecosystem partners including AWS Bedrock, Groq, NVIDIA, Ollama, Together AI, and Fireworks have supported its APIs.
What it can do
- Unified APIs for inference, RAG, agents, tools, safety, and evals
- OpenAI-compatible endpoints for drop-in client compatibility
- Prepackaged distributions for local, on-prem, mobile, and cloud
- SDKs for Python, Node, iOS, and Android
Setup
Install via pip (pip install llama-stack) or Docker, then run a distribution and point an OpenAI-compatible client at the local server.
Prerequisites
Python 3.10+, Docker for distribution images, and API keys for any remote inference providers used.
