JsonFormer
Bulletproof structured JSON generation by filling fixed tokens around model output.
About
JsonFormer is a Python library that makes language models generate schema-conforming JSON reliably. Its insight is that in structured data many tokens are fixed and predictable, so it fills in the fixed tokens during generation and only delegates the content tokens to the model, which is both more efficient and far less error-prone than prompt engineering plus post-processing.
It wraps Hugging Face transformers models, supports a subset of JSON Schema including numbers, booleans, strings, arrays, and nested objects, and is MIT licensed with a pip-installable package. Caveat: the canonical repository has not been meaningfully updated in several years, and newer structured-output approaches like constrained decoding in vLLM or guided generation in Outlines have largely superseded it, though the technique remains instructive.
What it can do
- Guaranteed syntactically valid JSON output
- JSON Schema subset support for objects, arrays, primitives
- Token-efficient generation skipping fixed tokens
- Hugging Face transformers compatibility
- MIT licensed
- Colab example notebook
Setup
pip install jsonformer, then wrap a Hugging Face model and tokenizer with a JSON schema and prompt.
Prerequisites
Python environment and a Hugging Face transformers model.
