InvokeAI
A canvas-first creative studio for local image generation — layers, inpainting and regional prompting in a Photoshop-like UI.
About
InvokeAI is an open-source creative studio for running diffusion models entirely on your own hardware. Its centerpiece is the Unified Canvas — a layer-based, non-destructive editing workspace with inpainting, outpainting, brush tools, regional prompting and ControlNet, so you iterate on regions of an image instead of regenerating from scratch. Around it sit a visual model manager, boards/gallery for organizing outputs, and a node-based workflow builder for repeatable pipelines. It serves a local web server with a React UI plus a FastAPI backend (Swagger at /docs) and supports multi-user deployments with JWT/Bearer auth. SD1.5, SDXL and FLUX families are supported. Distributed under Apache-2.0, it is the most commercially-friendly license of the three big local image UIs — no copyleft obligations on derivative use.
What it can do
- **Unified Canvas**: layer-based, non-destructive image editing with inpainting, outpainting, brush masking and region-aware generation
- **Regional prompting + ControlNet**: prompt different regions independently; ControlNet-guided composition
- **Workflow builder**: node-based generation pipelines for repeatable production work
- **Model manager**: install/switch SD1.5, SDXL and FLUX-family models from inside the UI (plus manual install)
- **Boards & gallery**: organize outputs into boards; session queue with batch generation
- **API & multi-user**: FastAPI backend with OpenAPI/Swagger docs, session queue router, Bearer/JWT auth in multi-user mode
- **CLI**: terminal-based generation path for developers and automation
Setup
Automatic installer (recommended)
- Download
InvokeAI-installer-vX.Y.Z.zipfrom the GitHub releases page (Windows, macOS, Linux) - Unzip; on Windows first double-click
WinLongPathsEnabled.regto avoid long-path failures - Run
install.bat(Windows) orinstall.sh(Linux/macOS); choose the default (latest) version, pick an install location with several GB free, and select your GPU device - Run
invoke.bat/invoke.sh→ choose "run the UI" → open http://127.0.0.1:9090 - Install at least one generation model via the built-in Model Manager before generating
pip install (advanced)
pip install InvokeAI==6.14.2(check PyPI for the current version)- Run the
invokeailauncher and follow the first-time prompts
Updates: re-run the same installer and select the new version — existing models and configs are preserved.
Prerequisites
- Windows 10+, macOS (Apple Silicon, 16 GB+ unified memory recommended), or Linux - GPU strongly recommended: NVIDIA 8 GB+ VRAM for SDXL (SD1.5 runs on less); FLUX models want 12 GB+ - Python handled by the installer; pip route needs Python 3.10–3.11 - Several GB of disk space for the app plus model weights (the installer downloads PyTorch, ~several GB)
