InnerPlant
Living plant sensors that optically signal stress weeks before it becomes visible.
About
InnerPlant takes an unusual route to crop intelligence: instead of bolting sensors onto equipment, it engineers crops themselves to signal. Plants carry a safe, food-studied protein that makes them emit optical signals within about 24 hours of stress from disease, pests, water shortage or nutrient deficiency. Those signals are readable in daylight with common optical filters on equipment ranging from smartphones to tractor cameras to satellites, and the company's software turns the imagery into early, specific alerts.
The company launched InnerTomato in 2020 and has focused on soybeans and cotton, completing its first commercial season in 2025 with a detection network across Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, and plans expansion into the High Plains and Minnesota in 2027. John Deere has invested in the company. Caveat: this is still early-stage commercialization, limited to partner seed genetics and detection plots; treat yield-protection claims as provider-reported until independent multi-season data exists.
What it can do
- Genetically adapted living plant sensors signaling stress optically
- Detection within ~24 hours of infection or stress onset
- Signals readable from smartphones, tractors and satellites
- AI software platform translating imagery into specific alerts
- Weekly scouting reports with ground-truth DNA validation
Setup
Plant InnerPlant-enabled seed genetics; detection network and alerts delivered via the company platform.
Prerequisites
Access to InnerPlant partner seed genetics; participation in the detection network region.

Trust score — 6/10
Scored 6/10 (metrics tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: founded 2018; first commercial season 2025; John Deere investment; Farm Progress field reporting. Strengths: genuinely novel sensing paradigm, early detection weeks ahead of visual scouting. Docked for: (1) still early commercialization with limited crop and region coverage; (2) yield claims await independent multi-season validation. License: Proprietary biotech + software; partner-network model.
