Grit

Automated code migrations and tech-debt cleanup that opened pull requests on autopilot.

About

Grit combined static analysis with machine learning to automate the maintenance work developers dread: framework migrations, dependency upgrades, and tech-debt cleanup. Its GritQL query language gave it a syntactic understanding of code, so it could generate pull requests converting JavaScript to TypeScript, modernizing AngularJS apps, or rolling out dependency bumps across a repo. The company was founded in 2022 by Morgante Pell, formerly a senior staff architect at Google Cloud, and its pitch was that migrations could run up to ten times faster than manual effort, integrated through GitHub, VS Code, and the CLI.

In April 2025 Honeycomb acquired Grit to power AI-driven autoinstrumentation for its observability platform, and the standalone open-source Grit CLI repository has since been removed from GitHub. The docs site still resolves, but the product's future as an independent migration tool is effectively over. Treat this entry as historical context: the GritQL ideas live on inside Honeycomb, and teams looking for automated migrations today should evaluate active alternatives instead.

What it can do

  • GritQL: pattern language for syntactic code transformations
  • Automated pull requests for migrations and dependency upgrades
  • Pre-built migration patterns (JS to TS, AngularJS to Angular, and more)
  • Custom migration authoring
  • GitHub, VS Code, and CLI integrations (historical)

Setup

  1. Note: the standalone Grit CLI is no longer maintained after the April 2025 Honeycomb acquisition.
  2. Historical setup was: install the Grit CLI, connect it to your GitHub repositories.
  3. Pick a migration from the pattern library (or write one in GritQL) and run it against a branch.
  4. Review the generated pull request before merging, as with any automated change.

Prerequisites

A GitHub account; note the product was discontinued as a standalone tool in 2025.

Trust score — 5/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 5/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Honeycomb acquisition confirmed April 2025 (Pulse2, PR Newswire); the getgrit/grit GitHub repo no longer exists (GitHub API returns 404); grit.io verified live but redirects to docs.grit.io. Strengths: credible team and genuinely novel GritQL approach; acquisition validates the tech. Docked for: (1) product discontinued as a standalone tool; (2) no usable current offering to evaluate or onboard to. License: was open source; current status uncertain post-acquisition.
