gptcommit

Never write a commit message again: git hook that drafts messages with an LLM.

About

gptcommit by zurawiki is a git prepare-commit-msg hook that uses a large language model to draft commit messages from your staged diff. Run git commit as usual and the hook fills in a message — a short imperative title plus one to three factual bullets with conventional-commit prefixes — which you can edit before committing. It is written in Rust, distributed via crates.io and Homebrew.

Install with cargo install --locked gptcommit, then gptcommit install in each repo with an OpenAI API key. Recent versions default to a fast reasoning model (gpt-6-luna) with per-file summaries, quiet generation, and configurable ignore rules, and empty or fully ignored staged changes leave the message untouched. It remains one of the most-starred AI commit-message tools in the Rust CLI space.

What it can do

  • Auto-drafts commit messages from staged diffs via a git hook
  • Conventional-commit prefixes, imperative titles, factual bullets
  • Per-file summarization with quiet, inspectable generation
  • Configure ignore rules; ignored changes leave messages untouched

Setup

cargo install --locked gptcommit (or brew install zurawiki/brews/gptcommit), then run gptcommit install in your repo with an OpenAI API key.

Prerequisites

Rust toolchain (for cargo install) or Homebrew; an OpenAI API key with credits; a git repository.
