GPT4All
Open-source desktop app to chat with local LLMs privately — no GPU, no API keys
About
GPT4All by Nomic AI is a free, MIT-licensed desktop application that runs large language models privately on everyday desktops and laptops. Install it, pick a model from the curated library (a few GB each), and chat entirely offline — no API calls, no GPU required. Its LocalDocs feature lets you chat with your own files and folders. Developers get official Python (pypi gpt4all), TypeScript, Go, and C# bindings, plus integrations with tools like Weaviate. ~77k GitHub stars. Note: development has visibly slowed — the last release was v3.10.0 (Feb 2025) — so treat it as mature-but-maintenance-mode rather than fast-moving.
What it can do
- **Offline LLM chat** — curated model library (Llama 3, DeepSeek R1 distillations, and more) running entirely on-device.
- **LocalDocs** — chat with local files and folders (PDF ingestion reported shaky in third-party comparisons).
- **CPU-friendly inference** — runs without a GPU; plays well with NVIDIA GPUs when present.
- **Official bindings** — Python, TypeScript, Go, and C# bindings for embedding local inference in apps.
- **Integrations** — e.g. Weaviate vector-DB retriever module using GPT4All embeddings.
Setup
- Download the installer for Windows, Windows ARM, macOS, or Ubuntu from gpt4all.io and run it (the installer downloads additional components — grant firewall access if it stalls).
- Open the app, browse the model library, and click Download on a model that fits your RAM/VRAM (parallel downloads supported).
- Go to Chats → Load Default Model and start chatting offline.
Python bindings
```bash
pip install gpt4all
```
See gpt4all-bindings/python/README.md in the repo for usage.
Prerequisites
- A desktop OS: Windows (x64 or ARM), macOS, or Ubuntu. - Disk space for models (a few GB each) plus enough RAM to hold the model in memory. - Internet for the initial installer/model downloads; afterwards fully offline. - No GPU required; CPU inference via bundled backends.
