Gitingest
Turn any Git repository into a prompt-friendly text digest for LLMs — replace hub with ingest.
About
Gitingest (cyclotruc/gitingest, MIT) turns any Git repository into a prompt-friendly text ingest for LLMs. Its signature trick: replace "hub" with "ingest" in any GitHub URL to get an instant web digest of the codebase, complete with file-tree structure, token counts, and formatted content optimized for LLM prompts. It also ships as a Python package (pip install gitingest) with an ingest() function returning summary, tree, and content, plus a CLI for local directories and URLs.
The tool went viral in 2024–2025 as the fastest way to give an AI agent full context on an unfamiliar repo. Caveats: the web service can be slow or rate-limited on very large repositories; the CLI is officially Linux-only; and like all repo-to-prompt tools, it will happily ingest secrets if they're committed — verify what's in the repo first.
What it can do
- URL-based repo digest (hub -> ingest)
- Python package with ingest() API
- CLI for local directories and URLs
- Token counts and file-tree stats
- LLM-optimized output formatting
Setup
Web: replace github.com with gitingest.com in any repo URL. CLI: pip install gitingest.
Prerequisites
For CLI/Python: Python 3. Web version needs nothing.
