GitHub Copilot CLI
Copilot in the terminal with computer-use — autonomous desktop operation on macOS and Windows.
About
GitHub Copilot CLI extends Copilot from the editor into the terminal, and its October 2026 public preview added computer-use capabilities: autonomous desktop operation on macOS and Windows. Beyond generating commands, the agent can operate the desktop environment to complete multi-step workflows that span terminal, browser, and GUI applications. It builds on the same Copilot subscription developers already use, bringing agentic coding into the shell where many developers spend most of their time.
The honest picture: computer-use is in public preview, and autonomous desktop operation raises obvious safety questions — an agent clicking through your OS needs tight permission boundaries. The CLI's usefulness depends heavily on the quality of its tool definitions for your specific stack. As with all Copilot products, it requires a paid Copilot subscription, and enterprise admins will need to evaluate the security posture of granting an agent desktop control.
