Ghost
The independent open-source publishing platform — blog, newsletter, and paid memberships with 0% platform fees.
About
Ghost launched in 2013 via a Kickstarter campaign and has grown into one of the most widely self-hosted publishing platforms, with roughly 52,500 GitHub stars (TryGhost/Ghost, Sept 2026 index) and an MIT license. It bundles a fast writing editor, newsletter sending, tiered paid memberships, and a full Content + Admin API so it can also serve as a headless CMS.
Ghost charges a flat 0% transaction fee on subscription revenue: you pay only the standard Stripe processing fees, which undercuts Substack-style revenue-share models for paid publications. Ghost(Pro) managed hosting is billed annually at $18/mo Starter (1,000 members), $29/mo Publisher (custom themes, paid subscriptions), and $199/mo Business; self-hosting is free but needs a VPS plus Mailgun for newsletters, realistically $4–$40/mo in infrastructure (2026 pricing guides). Honest limits: no native e-commerce, so selling products means bolting on Shopify or a separate checkout; and the self-hosted route puts OS patches and Ghost CLI upgrades on you. No published performance benchmarks found.
What it can do
- Blog, newsletter, and tiered paid-membership publishing in one platform
- 0% platform fee on subscription revenue (Stripe processing fees only)
- Content API and Admin API for headless CMS usage
- Custom themes and Handlebars templating
- Native SEO, AMP, and RSS support
- Zapier and 100+ integrations
- Self-hostable under the MIT license
Setup
Sign up for Ghost(Pro) and publish in minutes, or install the CLI on your own VPS with npm install ghost-cli -g and run ghost install.
Prerequisites
A custom domain (for Ghost(Pro)); self-hosting needs a VPS with Node.js and MySQL plus a Mailgun account for newsletter delivery.

Works with
Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (VERIFIED tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: MIT license and ~52.5k GitHub stars confirmed via the TryGhost/Ghost repo index (Sept 2026); Ghost(Pro) pricing ($18/$29/$199 annual) and 0% platform-fee claim consistent across four independent 2026 sources (glukhov.org, two dev.to guides, Medium). Strengths: the reference independent publishing platform, mature membership + newsletter tooling, self-hostable, API-first. Docked for: (1) no native e-commerce — product sales need a third-party checkout; (2) self-hosting shifts maintenance (patches, CLI upgrades, Mailgun config) onto the user. License: MIT (open source).
