ElectricSQL
Local-first Postgres sync engine; now part of Databricks for agentic apps.
Acquired — still operating
acquired by Databricks Aug 2026
About
ElectricSQL built a read-path sync engine for Postgres: it tails logical replication and serves subsets of tables (Shapes) to clients over HTTP with resumable offsets, so local-first apps and edge clients stay in sync without polling. The same team developed PGlite, the WebAssembly build of Postgres that runs in a browser tab or inside an application, which grew to millions of weekly downloads. Electric raised about $7M from Spark Capital, Lunar Ventures and angels including the founders of Supabase, CockroachDB and Xata.
In August 2026 Databricks acquired Electric to bring local Postgres to agentic applications: each agent gets a lightweight local database (PGlite) with ultra-low-latency access to its working context, while Electric Sync reconciles state back to Lakebase, Databricks' central Postgres. The entry is historical as an independent company; the technology now ships inside Databricks' two-tier agent data architecture.
What it can do
- Real-time Postgres-to-client sync over HTTP via the Shapes API
- PGlite: full Postgres compiled to WebAssembly for browser and edge
- CRDT-backed conflict handling from database research lineage
- Databricks integration: per-agent local Postgres synced to Lakebase
Setup
Historically: Docker image against your Postgres with wal_level=logical; now via Databricks.
Prerequisites
Postgres with logical replication enabled (for the OSS engine).
