About

Distilabel is Argilla's open-source Python framework for synthetic data generation and AI feedback, built on verified research methodologies (UltraFeedback, DEITA, and similar papers). It gives engineers a programmatic, pipeline-based way to synthesize instruction-following datasets, dialogue data, and preference data for DPO and RLHF, with a unified API that works across LLM providers.

The project is community-proven at scale: it has been used to create datasets with over a million records, including OpenHermesPreference, and integrates tightly with the Hugging Face ecosystem. It is Apache 2.0 licensed and actively maintained, with roughly 2.7K GitHub stars in third-party snapshots from 2026. The main caveat is that synthetic-data quality still depends heavily on the judge model and pipeline design; Distilabel provides the machinery, not a guarantee of dataset quality.

What it can do

  • Pipeline-based synthetic data generation from research papers
  • Unified API for any LLM provider as generator or judge
  • Preference data pipelines for DPO and RLHF workflows
  • Hugging Face Hub integration for dataset publishing
  • Scalable, fault-tolerant execution with community recipes

Setup

pip install distilabel, then define pipelines in Python; integrate with Hugging Face Hub for dataset publishing.

Prerequisites

Python 3.8+; access to an LLM provider for generation and judging.
