Contextual AI
Enterprise platform for building grounded, specialized RAG agents.
About
Contextual AI is a Mountain View startup building an enterprise platform for specialized retrieval-augmented generation agents, marketed as RAG 2.0. It was founded in 2023 by Douwe Kiela, who co-invented RAG while at Meta FAIR, and Amanpreet Singh. The platform combines end-to-end trainable retrieval with a Grounded Language Model (GLM) aimed at improving factual accuracy, deployable as SaaS or on-prem so data never leaves the customer's environment.
The company raised an $80 million Series A in August 2024 led by Greycroft, with Bezos Expeditions, Nvidia's NVentures, HSBC Ventures, Snowflake Ventures, Bain Capital Ventures, and Lightspeed participating, at an estimated $609 million valuation (PitchBook). The platform reached general availability in January 2025, with HSBC and Qualcomm among its clients.
Caveats: RAG capabilities are being commoditized inside hyperscaler AI suites, so differentiation rests on retrieval quality and grounding claims that should be validated on your own documents. Enterprise deployments carry the usual long sales and security-review cycles.
