About

Chromatic is the dominant visual testing service for teams using Storybook. Built by the Storybook maintainers, it publishes a hosted, versioned Storybook for every commit, captures every story in a standardized cloud rendering environment, and diffs those captures against approved baselines. Every story effectively becomes a visual test without writing separate render tests.

TurboSnap reduces billed snapshots by tracing changed source files and reusing previous captures for unaffected stories, and a 2026 shift brought AI-assisted diff triage that auto-classifies a large share of diffs as noise versus real change, cutting review fatigue. The free tier covers 5,000 snapshots a month (roughly 25,000 TurboSnaps), with paid tiers starting around $179/month for 35,000 snapshots. The main limitation is Storybook lock-in: teams not on Storybook generally reach for Percy or Argos CI instead.

What it can do

  • Cloud-rendered snapshots of every Storybook story
  • Pixel-level baseline diffing with review/approval UI
  • TurboSnap smart re-snapshotting to cut snapshot volume
  • AI-assisted diff triage to filter noise from real changes
  • PR integration with per-story snapshot opt-out
