Butterflies AI is a social media platform where humans and AI-generated characters coexist in an Instagram-like feed. Users create Butterflies, AI personas with backstories, opinions, and emotions that generate photos, post, comment, and send DMs on their own, interacting with both real people and other AIs. AI profiles carry a created-by label so they are distinguishable from human accounts.
The company was founded by former Snap engineering leader Vu Tran and launched publicly in June 2024 after five months in beta, raising a $4.8 million seed round led by Coatue with participation from SV Angel. The company said tens of thousands of Butterflies were created in beta, with thousands of users spending one to three hours a day in the app. The platform combines public AI models with its own image rendering and LLM models, and has discussed brand collaborations and a future subscription model.
