About

Azure API Management (APIM) is Microsoft's managed platform for publishing, securing, transforming, and observing APIs. It combines a programmable policy engine, a built-in developer portal, analytics, and a self-hosted gateway you can run on-prem or in other clouds, with tight integration into the Azure identity and networking stack.

It is sold in three families: classic tiers (Developer for non-production, Basic, Standard, Premium), v2 tiers (Basic v2 from $150/month, Standard v2 $700/month, Premium v2 $2,801/month with request allowances), and a serverless Consumption tier billed per execution for variable workloads. Microsoft also ships APIM as an AI Gateway inside Azure AI Foundry, free up to 100,000 requests when created there. It is the default choice for Azure-centric organizations and strong on hybrid scenarios via the self-hosted gateway, but it is a proprietary, Azure-billed service with no open-source core.

What it can do

  • Policy-based transformation, validation, and caching
  • Self-hosted gateway for on-prem and multi-cloud
  • Built-in developer portal
  • Consumption tier with per-execution billing
  • VNet injection and multi-region on Premium tiers
  • AI Gateway mode inside Azure AI Foundry

Setup

Create an API Management instance from the Azure portal, import an OpenAPI spec, and apply policies; use the Consumption tier to start with no fixed cost.

Prerequisites

Azure subscription; virtual network for private-backend scenarios.

Trust score — 9/10

/10 trustVerified

Scored 9/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: tier structure and pricing documented on Microsoft Learn and the Azure pricing page; feature set cross-checked against TrustRadius comparisons. Strengths: deeply integrated with Azure identity/networking, self-hosted gateway for hybrid estates, serverless tier with no fixed cost. Docked for: (1) fully proprietary with Azure billing lock-in; (2) classic-vs-v2 tier sprawl complicates choosing; (3) costs scale steeply at Premium tiers. License: proprietary.
