Argo CD
The de facto GitOps continuous delivery standard for Kubernetes.
About
Argo CD is a declarative, GitOps continuous delivery tool for Kubernetes and a CNCF graduated project. An in-cluster controller watches Git repositories containing Kubernetes manifests (plain YAML, Kustomize, Helm, Jsonnet) and continuously reconciles live cluster state with the desired state declared in Git, replacing the push-based deploy stage of CI pipelines with a pull model that enables drift detection and self-healing.
It offers a web UI, CLI, and Kubernetes-native API, supports manual or automatic sync, multi-cluster management from one control plane, and ApplicationSets for templating many similar applications. Argo CD sits alongside Argo Workflows, Rollouts, and Events as an integrated delivery suite. Limitations: the learning curve is steep with many concepts to master, RBAC and secret management need care at scale, and teams wanting a leaner composable operator often prefer Flux.
What it can do
- Declarative GitOps sync
- Drift detection and self-healing
- Web UI, CLI, and API
- Multi-cluster management
- ApplicationSets templating
- Manual or automatic sync modes
Setup
kubectl apply the Argo CD install manifest to a cluster, then define Application resources pointing at Git repos.
Prerequisites
A Kubernetes cluster and Git repositories holding deployable manifests.
