Apache APISIX
Cloud-native, high-performance API gateway with dynamic config and hot-reload plugins.
About
Apache APISIX is a dynamic, real-time, high-performance API gateway built on NGINX and etcd. Its differentiators are millisecond-level config synchronization without restarts, a large plugin system (auth, rate limiting, observability, transformations, an AI-gateway plugin set for LLM proxying), and multi-protocol support: HTTP, gRPC, WebSocket, MQTT, and TCP/UDP, plus a Kubernetes ingress controller.
API7.ai established the project and open-sourced it in June 2019, donated it to the Apache incubator in October 2019, and APISIX graduated as an Apache Top-Level Project in July 2020, unusually fast. It is now vendor-neutral under Apache governance with over 460 contributors, and API7.ai sells API7 Enterprise (design, portal, monetization) around the open core. Independent benchmarks are not published by Neuricon; the vendor's own materials claim sub-5ms gateway overhead, which should be treated as provider-reported.
What it can do
- Hot-reload plugins with no gateway restarts
- Dynamic routing, upstreams, and certificates
- AI gateway plugins (multi-LLM routing, retries, fallbacks)
- gRPC transcoding, MQTT, WebSocket, and TCP/UDP proxying
- Kubernetes ingress controller and Gateway API support
- Canary, blue-green, and A/B traffic splitting
Setup
docker run apache/apisix for the gateway plus the etcd-backed dashboard, or install via Helm on Kubernetes.
Prerequisites
etcd cluster for dynamic config (bundled in Docker images); dashboard for UI management.

Trust score — 9/10
Scored 9/10 (verified tier, metrics-v1). Evidence: Apache graduation timeline and API7.ai history confirmed by the project's own blog and the foundation; star count read directly from GitHub. Strengths: top-level Apache project with vendor-neutral governance, huge contributor base, genuinely hot-reload architecture. Docked for: (1) performance numbers are provider-reported with no published independent benchmarks; (2) the full platform experience (dashboard, portal) needs the commercial API7 packaging or self-assembly.
